Environmental Concerns

A growing interest in environmental concerns, coupled with huge advances in technology and science, has led to the development of lots of gadgets and devices to allow people to live in a way which is more environmentally friendly. Here we explain a few of the best.

Heating Systems

Boilers: Though boilers in themselves aren’t a new invention, advances in technology has made them more and more effective. Worcester boilers are made by the Bosch Group and they can improve the efficiency of your house’s heating system; the Greenstar 30CDi boiler, for example, runs at 90% efficiency. Take a look at the British Gas website for more information on worcester boilers.

Cylinder Jacket: This is simply an insulating jacket you wrap round the outside of your hot water tank to keep it warm; it claims to cut heat loss by around seventy five percent and is cheap as well.

Thermostatic Radiator Valves: These little devices allow you to vary the radiator temperature in separate rooms of your house. This means you can choose which rooms you want kept warm and cold, thus cutting down on the amount of energy and money wasted heating empty rooms.

Solar Thermal Panels: Solar thermal panels can be used to heat your house’s water, and claim to be able to generate 50-70% of the average home’s annual hot water needs. They attach to your roof and collect the photons or ‘light particles’ which are contained in the sun’s rays. The energy from these photons is then passed to the electrons contained in the lower level of the cell; the electrons use this energy to jump across the barrier between the upper and lower levels of the cell. They begin to flow round the created circuit, thus producing clean, renewable electricity which can be used to heat your home.

Electrical

Solio Charger: The Solio charger is a compact, stylish little device which uses solar energy to charge electrical equipment like MP3s, phones or Digital Cameras. It’s very useful to take travelling as it doesn’t need to be plugged in, thus removing the need for adapter plugs.

OWL cost monitor: This device is designed to measure a household’s electricity use, allowing you to see exactly how much electricity you’re using and how much you’re paying for it. You simply plug it onto your electricity meter and use it to monitor your energy use.

The Camel Eco Showerhead: That long, hot shower in the morning might be nice but it’s costing both you and the environment a lot due to the amount of energy and money needed to heat the water. The Camel Eco Showerhead has a special system which reduces the water flow through the showerhead whilst still maintaining a high water pressure.
